China has largest population of people with dementia, new study claims

The burden of dementia on China has been significantly underestimated according to the results of a major new study published in The Lancet today (Friday 7 June 2013).
According to the large-scale literature analysis carried out by the University of Edinburgh, there were 9.19 million people with dementia in China in 2010 – up from 3.68 million people in 1990. This means that China has more people with dementia than any other country.

Alzheimer’s Society comment:

‘The scale of the challenge of dementia is something that many countries across the world are beginning to realise. As our populations increase in size and the average age continues to rise, this challenge is only going to grow in the future.

While it is important for individual countries to take action, it is also important that they work together to share expertise and increase understanding. Last month’s announcement that the UK will use its leadership of the G8 to launch a global effort on dementia and host a dementia summit offers new hope to people affected by dementia in the UK and abroad.’
