Record level of flu jab uptake among NHS staff

More than half of frontline NHS staff in England have now been vaccinated against influenza, according to latest figures.

The Public Health England figures, published today, show that 494,083 (53.1%) were vaccinated by 31 December 2013.

This represents the first time that vaccination levels have passed 50%. NHS staff flu vaccination totals were 45.6% at the end of the 2012-13 winter, 44.7% in 2011-12 and 34.7% in 2010-11.

Dean Royles, chief executive of the NHS Employers organisation that runs the Flu Fighter campaign in support of staff vaccination, said: “Our ambition has always been to make staff flu vaccinations the norm and there are exciting signs that this is happening.

“We’re seeing around 5,000 staff being vaccinated every day and every single one of those will help keep the NHS and its patients safe, especially in any event of a flu outbreak.”
