PURPLE Angel founder Norman McNamara is delighted with the incredible news that Virgin Atlantic have accepted an invitation to learn more about dementia from the Purple Angel Association.
The Purple Angel organisation were established in 2013 by Norms McNamara, who was diagnosed with dementia in his early 50s and after experiencing discrimination himself, he vowed no person suffering from dementia should be treated like he had been and set about raising awareness and he has said that Virgin accepted the invitation is incredible news.
Norman said: “Normally people would not put the words dementia and flying on a plane in the same sentence, but you would be surprised how many people with dementia still fly to go on holiday.
“It’s so important that airline staff are aware that being in a small space for a certain amount of time can be stressful enough to most people but for someone with dementia it can be much worse.
“But with the video I have made for all airline staff and the other information sheets that we are supplying them they will be much better equipped to deal with whatever may come their way.
“This also applies to trains, and other public transport services so we are hoping others will follow in Virgins footsteps and ask us how we can help them, to help those with dementia and their carers.”
Virgin Atlantic have become the most high profile organisation to sign up to the Purple Angel, and have followed in the footsteps of both Brixham Town Council and Torbay Council, both of whom have become dementia friendly.
A statement was released by Caron Cares, who provide advice and information for anyone caring for the elderly, which said: “Virgin Atlantic are working with the Purple Angel Association to give employees a greater understanding about dementia and how best help any passengers with the condition.
“Specially made videos and fact sheets are being designed and will shortly be available to staff members via their intranet and in training sessions.”
Local and National businesses encourage employees to recognise that customers with dementia may have particular needs and how to help them. Displaying a Purple Angel sign indicates to customers that staff have an understanding which helps to reduce stigma and isolation.
