Breathing difficulty or chronic obstructive airways disease, COAD, is the overall term used to describe a variety of illnesses, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. People with COAD have permanently damaged lungs and find it difficult to breathe most of the time.
Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchial tubes that results in excessive secretions of mucous into the tubes. This causes the tissue to swell which in turn may narrow or close off bronchial tubes. Chronic bronchitis is defined as a cough that occurs every day with sputum production that lasts for at least 3 months, in two consecutive years.
In emphysema, the air sacs are over inflated when air becomes trapped in them and their elastic fibres are destroyed. Small holes can develop in the walls of the sacs, leaving them unable to work properly.
The breathing difficulty Care Plan sets out a clear explanation of the resident’s issue, and will guide the nurse or carer through the process of preparing a comprehensive, individual person centred strategy.
