The Governing Body of the group which commissions most of the healthcare in west Kent is considering how to improve care for older people at its meeting in public next week.
NHS West Kent Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) will be discussing its Older People’s Strategy at its meeting on Tuesday 25 June at the River Centre, Medway Wharf Road, Tonbridge, starting at 1.30pm.
The strategy aims to:
• Reduce premature mortality from major causes of death, in particular, excess winter deaths
• Increase the number of people recorded on GP registers as having long-term health conditions, especially COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) – to enable more people with these conditions to get the most appropriate treatment
• Ensure people from all communities feel supported to manage their condition
• Ensure early diagnosis of long-term health conditions
• Reduce the number of hip fractures and falls for people aged 65 and over
• Achieve safer and more cost effective prescribing
Dr Bob Bowes, chair of the CCG, said: “Our aim is for older people to have care that keeps them as well as possible for as long as possible, and for there to be excellent support for their carers – often their husband or wife, who may themselves be elderly and frail.”
The Governing Body of NHS West Kent CCG holds a meeting in public every month, when people are welcome to ask questions for 20 minutes at the beginning about items on the agenda.
At every meeting, the CCG reviews the quality and performance of the services it commissions and the financial position.
People can get involved in the work of the CCG via their GP practice Patient Participation Group, which is where people can find out what is happening within the practice and the CCG, and is a channel for feedback to the CCG. Almost all practices in West Kent have Patient Participation Groups.
Patients can also get involved in the West Kent Health Network which offers a chance to contribute to how health services are designed and delivered, as well as regular updates.
The papers for this meeting will be available on the CCG’s website, at www.westkentccg.nhs.uk.
