Two south Norfolk community volunteers have been recognised for their dedication with awards in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
David O’Neale, of The Street, Bridgham, received an MBE for services to his village community, while Michael Gooderson, of Farm Close, off Louie’s Lane, Roydon, received a BEM for services to young people and
the community
.
Mr O’Neale, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease early last year, said his family was delighted with the award. “We have spent 25 years in Bridgham and I have thoroughly enjoyed activating the community through various millennium projects, community
concerts
, local history publications, Viking re-enactments, Diamond Jubilee celebrations and our most recent event – a banquet a fortnight ago to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the coronation.” Mr O’Neale said he still had ideas about what could be done in the community, although having motor neurone disease meant his practical input was less.
“But the good news is that the wonderful people who live in this area are so supportive and keen to carry on in the tradition I have helped to create.”
Rosemary Hensby, who nominated Mr O’Neale for the award, said he had been “tireless” in his work for Bridgham. “We are exceptionally lucky to have David in our community.”
Mr Gooderson formerly ran the Great Ormond Street Scout and Guide Group where he helped raise almost £1 million for the hospital’s Wishing Well Appeal. He continued his involvement with the Scouts after moving to Norfolk where he set up a Scout and Guide unit at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, as well as the 46th Norwich Scout Group for severely
disabled
children.
A former county commissioner and district commissioner, he has also been a trustee of the Scout Association and chairman of the UK Scout Association, and as a long-standing magistrate, he is chairman of the Norfolk Youth Panel.
He said he felt very “surprised, humbled and honoured by the award”. Being involved with the Scout movement had enabled him to have “a wonderful time and give something back”.
