Underactive Thyroid Nursing  Care Plan

The thyroid produces a hormone called thyroxine, which controls how much energy the body uses. When the thyroid does not produce enough thyroxine many of the body’s functions slow down. An Underactive thyroid cannot be prevented.

Most cases of underactive thyroid are caused either by the immune system attacking the thyroid or a damaged thyroid. An underactive thyroid is a life long condition and the treatment is to take thyroxine. Levothyroxine does not usually have any side effects as the tablets simply replace a missing hormone.

The Care Plan sets out a clear explanation of the resident’s issue, and will guide the nurse or carer through the process of preparing a comprehensive, individual person centred Care Plan.
